Mathematicians are not always good tutors.
There’s and old joke about a math teacher who is explaining a concept to his students and says, “from this equation, it’s obvious that this expression is also true.”
One of the students raises his hand and says, “I don’t understand how you got that second expression.” The teacher stops and stares silently at the board for the rest of class.
For the next three days, the problem remains on the board, but the teacher is holed up in his office, hunched over a growing stack of papers.
Finally, on the 4th day, he rushes back into class, looks at the student and says “I was right. It’s obvious,” and goes on with the lesson.

Enter math ninja Pete, two time a week. By February, Mary was getting A’s on all her quizzes and tests. She finished the year with a solid A and never looked back.
And her college major three years later? You guessed it: Math.
